Much of the portraits made by Botero are personal characters of his imagination, all from a past and melancholic time. For this reason many of his portrayed characters reflect his ideology of the Latin American man and woman. Painting these characters in a solemn attitude is their homage to their roots. Although this woman in profile on a green background reminds us of the portraits of illustrious Renaissance figures, it is evident that she is one of those characters we find in Botero's paintings where the fondas, the fiesta and the aguardiente take place.
Although it is a popular character, Botero gives it the dimension of an illustrious and heroic character, as well as bringing to mind the great masterpiece of Vermeer in the mention of this woman's earring, which becomes the main point of the composition, and a subtle and intelligent quote to the history of art.
