As monumental, or even more so than Fernando Botero's painting, is his sculpture. It seems logical that after an incessant exploration of the volume in canvas, his work would take him later on, in the 70s, to the three-dimensionality of sculpture, possibly the place where the manifestation of the volume can be grasped with greater force.
As Master Botero has said about his engagement with sculpture: “Well, the truth is that doing sculpture was like a natural development of my evolution. As a painter who is interested in volume, at a certain moment I wanted to touch these volumes, to feel them. Because it was the passion for form and volume that made me try to communicate them, to make them tangible”.
