Master Fernando Botero has often stated: an artist who is so obsessed with volume as he is can only see in sculpting a nature evolution of his art. For in creating the tactile illusion of painting in flat surfaces, he could not help but feel an intense desire to touch those volumes, to feel them with his own hands. That is why, in the seventies decade, Botero abandoned temporarily his pencils and brushes and devoted himself to learn the craft of sculpture. In a short time, the painter managed to translate his style to the three-dimensional figures that, for the first time, gave tangible existence to his unique aesthetic universe, which is nowadays recognized and celebrated throughout the entire world.
